Maritime Building
As cities evolve, buildings must keep pace to meet the changing needs of urban tenants while preserving their historic character. The renovation and addition of the Maritime Building marks an important step in the transformation of Seattle’s waterfront. With the removal of an elevated freeway, the Alaskan Way viaduct, this former warehouse embraces the era of renewal while retaining its industrial roots.
Working with the City, Landmarks Preservation Board and Beacon Capital Partners, the design team created an innovative structural approach to preserve the building’s rich character. A new concrete and steel frame revives the existing heavy timber structure into Class A office space, while a modern two-story roof addition crowns the building with new amenities and views.
