Bunker Hill Community College, Academic Student Success Center
At Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC), a new academic building transforms the student experience, reducing overcrowding, improving navigation, and creating a more connected campus environment. Designed to support inclusive achievement for all students, the project brings together student services, learning spaces, and community areas into a cohesive and accessible campus hub.
Organized around a landscaped courtyard, the building establishes a clear point of orientation while improving campus circulation. Daylight-filled classrooms, a library, and study and collaboration spaces support diverse learning styles and increase visibility and access for students. High-performance systems, including a net-zero-ready strategy, geothermal infrastructure, and resilient design, ensure the building performs efficiently and adapts over time.
Features
Net-Zero Ready Design
The building is designed to be net-zero ready, minimizing fossil fuel use through a high-efficiency geothermal system and preparing for future solar integration. It exceeds energy code by 20% and is targeting LEED Silver certification, supporting long-term performance and reduced environmental impact.
Planning for Growth and Change
Since 2007, NBBJ has partnered with BHCC to evaluate campus space, identifying the need to consolidate student services and better support a commuter population. The resulting Academic Student Success Center and Building E renovations deliver flexible, right-sized environments that can evolve with future enrollment and program needs.
A New Center for Campus Life
The courtyard serves as an outdoor sanctuary and social hub, supporting everyday use as well as events and informal gathering. A ground-level flexible classroom extends activity outdoors, creating new opportunities for connection beyond traditional academic spaces.
