21 E. State
Columbus, OH
In a dilemma all too common among US office buildings, 21 E. State found itself struggling to remain competitive due to its outdated design, with occupancy dropping to 20%. The new lobby renovation restores the building’s former vitality by both harkening back to the building’s origins in the 1920s, and creating a uniquely contemporary entry that uses warmth and openness to draw people in.
The new lobby uses form, materials and lighting to transform what was formerly a transient space into an inviting neighborhood hearth. Unique niches and lounge-like seating areas, which feature details inspired by flapper aesthetic and the roaring 20s, are offset by warm elements like wood panels and plants and a clear, inviting circulation plan.
Features
Previously a transient environment connecting elevator banks and a security desk, the building's original lobby offered little reason to linger or engage. The redesigned space, along with facade updates, a tailored entry and streetscape improvements revitalizes the prominent city building.
