Tencent’s Shenzhen Headquarters Project (Net City) places the needs of people and the environment before cars, resulting in an interconnected, organic ecosystem that paves the way for future cities.

Tencent’s Shenzhen Headquarters Project (Net City), places the needs of people and the environment before cars, resulting in an interconnected, organic ecosystem that paves the way for future cities. 

Placing People Before Cars

To create more sustainable buildings, building performance is best addressed from the outset through a coordinated, integrated approach. Nanjing Eco Hi-Tech Island in China embraces this notion, serving as the region’s center for the practice of high-tech innovation, with cultural and workplace buildings that restore the environment, interweave nature and reduce the use of critical resources such as energy and water.

Prioritizing cars over communities leads to busy, congested highways and cities that are separated from the very things that make them healthier—access to nature, opportunities for activity and enjoyable experiences. NBBJ’s design for the Shanghai Bund buries six lanes of traffic in an underground tunnel to create a safer and more enjoyable pedestrian environment and widen the existing riverfront walkway.
