North Carolina Children’s Health Master Plan

North Carolina Children’s creates a new model for pediatric care—bringing together clinical care, research, education and behavioral health on a single campus where healing, discovery and play are seamlessly integrated. A joint venture between UNC Health and Duke Health, North Carolina Children’s will be the first freestanding children’s hospital in the Carolinas, establishing a long-term vision for keeping care closer to home while creating a destination for pediatric innovation.
Working with NC Children's and local architect partner BSA, NBBJ's master plan organizes the 220-acre campus around two defining elements: a world-class children’s hospital and a woodland landscape that supports healing and well-being. All major Phase 1 destinations—including the hospital, outpatient care, behavioral health, research and education facilities—are located within a five-minute walk. Minutes from North Carolina’s Research Triangle, the campus connects to the region’s healthcare and research ecosystem while preserving and activating its natural landscape through pathways, playgrounds, art and gathering spaces. Throughout the campus, efficient clinical operations are paired with daylight, nature, movement and intuitive wayfinding to support patients, families and staff alike.
Features

The master plan establishes a scalable framework that allows inpatient, outpatient, behavioral health and research services to grow alongside advances in pediatric medicine and regional demand. Adaptable infrastructure, clear development zones and coordinated access and phasing strategies enable future expansion without compromising the campus experience. By translating a long-term vision for care, research, wellness and community into an actionable framework, the plan helps leadership make informed investment decisions today while preserving flexibility for decades to come.
