Bloomberg Businessweek Covers NBBJ-Designed V.A. Hospital That Weathers The Storm
Damage-causing weather events quadrupled in Asia and North America since 1980 and nearly doubled in Europe. We’ve seen how these disasters affect hospitals, sometimes shutting them down for weeks or even permanently. So, what if design could mitigate at least some of the effects natural disasters have on vital community infrastructure?
That's the design intent of the Veteran's Administration Hospital in New Orleans, featured this week in Bloomberg Businessweek. The design ensures patients can receive treatment even in the midst of hurricanes, flooding or both. For example, utilities — which connect the hospital to the power grid — are located on the fourth level to prevent flood damage.
