UC San Diego Viterbi Family Vision Research Center
Advancing breakthroughs in eye disease, the Viterbi Family Vision Research Center at UC San Diego brings scientists and clinicians together in a dedicated, cross-disciplinary hub. Designed as a safe, welcoming environment for those with low vision, the building supports world-class science while expressing the university’s mission to cure blindness and advance human health.
Located at the main gateway to UC San Diego’s medical campus, the center integrates laboratories, clinical trial areas and collaborative spaces within a transparent, light-filled structure. Developed through a unique integrated design-assist process—in which NBBJ worked closely with contractors and fabricators early in design—the building achieves exceptional precision, cost efficiency and constructability.
Features
One side of the building is dedicated to wet laboratories, while the other contains dry labs and offices. Between them, bright, light-filled lounges—modeled on the iris, where light meets the eye—create inviting spaces with kitchenettes where scientists can step out, connect, and collaborate.
