Tani Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse
Courthouses do more than house judicial proceedings—they embody the public's trust in the justice system. Replacing an outdated facility that had long outgrown its capacity, the Tani Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse creates a modern civic landmark that improves access to justice while supporting the continued growth of Sacramento County. Guided by California modern principles translated into timeless civic architecture, the design balances permanence with transparency, creating a courthouse that is both welcoming and functional.
Spanning approximately 540,000 square feet across 18 stories, the courthouse consolidates criminal and civil court operations, jury services, and administrative functions that were previously dispersed across multiple facilities. Housing 53 courtrooms, a large jury assembly room, food services and a civil settlement center, the building delivers a highly secure, efficient environment. Developed through a collaborative process involving judges, court staff, justice partners, builders and designers, the courthouse pairs thoughtful planning with authentic materials, abundant daylight and clear public circulation to create a dignified experience for all.
Features
Daylight-filled public spaces, expansive glazing and exposed concrete reinforce the ideals of openness and transparency while creating healthier, more welcoming environments for jurors, visitors and staff.
