Alaska Airlines Global Training Center
When Alaska Airlines acquired a massive 1990s suburban office building on the outskirts of Seattle, the challenge wasn’t simply to renovate it, but to transform it into a place where company culture could thrive. The result is a 650,000-square-foot Global Training Center that that brings Alaska Airlines’ values to life through spaces designed to welcome, educate and inspire its next generation. By reusing materials and reducing waste, the project generated significant cost savings: $100 million compared to a new build.
Reusing much of the existing structure, systems and materials, Alaska Airlines reimagined an aging office building for its next generation of frontline employees—flight attendants, pilots and essential staff—into a dynamic hub for learning, connection and future growth.
The project unites 500 employees from 14 work groups—from pilots logging simulator hours around the clock to flight attendants practicing emergency evacuations—under one roof. The soaring lobby, featuring precision-cut white oak slats and large-scale model airplanes suspended from the ceiling, announces immediately that this is no ordinary corporate retrofit. Every thoughtfully programmed space, from a fully adaptable 500-seat dining hall to a dedicated fitting studio where employees perfect their look, serves a single idea: the employee experience is the brand.
Features
Rather than tear down and start anew, the design repurposes 100% of the structural and electrical infrastructure, preserves 65% of mechanical systems and 60% of existing walls, and salvages 110,000 sf of carpet and 140,000 sf of ceiling tile, channelling budget toward the high-impact moments that shape Alaska’s culture.
