Architectural Digest: This Flower-Inspired Stadium Is All About Sustainability
What is good for the planet is also good for people. Drawing inspiration from nearby flora, Hangzhou Stadium is designed to use 2/3 less steel than comparable stadiums and streamline views of the field, reports Architectural Digest.
“Hangzhou is one of the most scenic cities in China, and its West Lake is renowned for its beauty, elegance, and unique foliage,” NBBJ Partner Robert Mankin tells the magazine. “The stadium draws upon this beauty by using the indigenous water lily, or lotus, of the West Lake as its conceptual inspiration, interpreting the form into a series of modular ‘petal’ structures that gracefully surround the stadium.”
