Google South Lake Union
Seattle, WA
Inspired by the metaphor exploring the transition space where the ocean meets the bluff edge, the lighting concept for Google’s South Lake Union headquarters plays a vital role in supporting and anchoring the water concept associated with each floor. Workspace zones are imagined as the bluff edge while the more fluid and lively interstitial spaces are imbued with the ever-changing quality of water.
The lighting design team began by examining how each floor’s lighting evokes the quality of water, creating a touchstone. For example, the Submurgence level, featuring the Jellyfish Lounge, features downlights that shine through a custom ceiling panel to create a dappled effect, enhancing the feeling of being underwater with jellyfish calmly floating in nearby tanks.
Features
Using efficient methods, the lighting team was able to design the lighting to be 19% below ASHRAE 90.1 2010 energy code to support the project’s LEED Gold target.
