Darius Umrigar has more than 30 years’ experience spanning science, education, healthcare and workplace sectors. As a science and higher education director, he operates as a trained architect and lead consultant, steering consultant teams from bid through design, planning, procurement and delivery of complex projects for key clients in the UK.

Understanding what scientists want and need in their research space is at the heart of designing better research buildings—ones that support wellbeing and engaging experiences, perform sustainably, and adapt to changing needs. Yet to date there haven’t been comprehensive surveys that explore scientists’ relationships with their built environment.

That’s why NBBJ has partnered with The New York Academy of Sciences, one of the country’s oldest and largest scientific societies, to survey the Academy’s community. We are excited to share with you the results of this partnership—The Future Lab, a survey exploring scientists’ work habits and needs for their research spaces. The Future Lab provides new insights into scientific workplaces and academic environments, and how these can drive the design of next generation research buildings.
