A Highly
Versatile Venue

After losing revenue due to increased competition from facilities in the region, the City of Hong Kong asked NBBJ to develop a scheme for Asia World Expo that would attract new business and maximize flexibility.

The completed design is flexible both in terms of the events it hosts and the speed in which changeover takes place. For example, the design can accommodate a 14,000 person concert one day and a 70,000 square meter convention the next. As the only column-free exhibition center in Asia, the design also allows trucks direct access for setup without disrupting exhibitors in other rooms.

The main exhibition hall — which is divided into light-controlled modules for functional versatility — features two sky-lit lobby/atrium spaces connected by a major concourse to various exhibit spaces. Both lobby entrances provide access to surrounding public transportation systems, including trains, boats, automobiles and taxi/bus service. The facility also includes associated service areas, meeting rooms, conference rooms, food and beverage concessions, and administrative offices.

Since its opening, the expo has hosted the ITU Telecom World Conference and the Asian Aerospace Conference, as well as concerts by Lady Gaga, Eric Clapton and Green Day.
