Ryan leads NBBJ’s international healthcare practice, bringing a unique focus on enhanced clinical performance, adaptable hospital design and the integration of advanced technologies and AI. He is committed to ensuring that research-driven methodologies are at the center of NBBJ’s design process. Ryan has presented ideas, projects and design research at conferences and forums across the United States and abroad.
Ryan has led the design of many of NBBJ’s most innovative healthcare projects, including the development of the modern Open Core model, a transformative inpatient planning approach that advances patient-centered care, staff collaboration, and operational efficiency. Recently, he has also helped Nationwide Children’s Hospital to transform its campus, including a first-of-its-kind pediatric behavioral health center than combines inpatient, outpatient, and research under one roof. Previously, Ryan led the design of the Miami Valley Heart and Orthopedic Center, recognized by Building Design and Construction Magazine as “the first large-scale prefabricated hospital project in the United States”.
Ryan’s work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Time, Architectural Record, A+U, Modern Healthcare, Architect, Dezeen, Metropolis, and Inc. He has authored articles for Harvard Business Review, Healthcare Design, Forbes and Becker’s Hospital Review. His work has received national and international recognition, including awards from Modern Healthcare and Healthcare Design, and has been the subject of published academic research by faculty at UNC, Penn State University, Clemson University and other institutions.
