A Window
Into Microsoft

With NBBJ, Microsoft created a world-class learning and visitor center to give the public a window into one of the world’s top tech companies.

Situated in the heart of the company’s main Redmond campus, the project serves as a new hub for employees and is the first space on campus open to the general public. The program includes learning spaces, training labs, a corporate library and archives, a visitor center, and a company store.

Microsoft was committed to adaptively re-using an existing structure, the former Eddie Bauer headquarters, and — while recognizing some shortcomings of the facility — saw this building as the centerpiece of its new west campus. The building suffered from a hidden entry sequence, awkward length and random core locations. The new design has created a significant outward face for Microsoft, improved circulation, and increased usable area.
