Psychological Studies

When envisioning their new Psychology Building, Miami University saw the need for an environment that enhanced learning through interaction and collaboration. This vision resulted in a facility that plays a prominent role in helping the University recruit superior faculty and students.

The Psychology Building combines a functioning clinic with 35 wet and dry research laboratories, as well as office suites, three classrooms and a lecture hall. Interdisciplinary research is promoted through contiguous spaces, vertical connections (via the main atrium) and areas for informal social interaction. The facility and its immediate surroundings have established a new 21st-century sciences quadrangle for the University, creating a new defined edge to the entire campus.

Inspired by the belief that classrooms should evoke freethinking and limitless learning opportunities, NBBJ developed a layout that not only reinforces this notion but also puts the many happenings and discoveries within the department on display. Rather than using a standard layout of classrooms circulating around a central atrium, NBBJ took this traditional floor plan and rearranged it so that research labs of different disciplines are placed next to each other and faculty space is shared by the entire University.
