Chase Brexton Health Services (CBHS) is a multi-site Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that provides full-service primary and behavioral health care to those they serve in greater Baltimore and its surrounding counties. A 20% increase in demand for service (>150,000 visits/year) prompted the client to seek larger quarters. They acquired the former Monumental Life Insurance Building and engaged NBBJ to provide design renovation services, transition/change management services, and a post-occupancy evaluation for their new 90,000 sf anchor clinic.

Design features included improved client access, Lean principles, open collaborative work spaces, and treatment “pods.” In tandem, while the construction was in progress, operational transition planning took place to redesign the patient care experience. Clinicians, designers and transition advisors were engaged throughout the life of the building project. Through that partnership, they were able not only activate the Monumental Life building but also eliminate treatment silos, coordinate care, de-fragment services and personalize the relationship between the treatment team and the client.
