Park for
the People

With its inviting landscape and variety of public spaces, Berezniki City Park will be the city’s new “green heart,” representing Uralkali’s commitment to making the city a better place to live and work.

The Uralkali Corporation, the world’s leading producer of potash, located in the remote Russian city of Berezniki, is moving forward with the development of a new world headquarters while also leading an initiative to redevelop and fund the reconstruction of the city’s Central Park.

Designed integrally with the headquarters, the transformed Berezniki City Park will become a regional destination and a venue for year-round cultural, sports and entertainment events. The principal drivers for the park’s redevelopment include: rejuvenating the park with new themes, spaces, elements and materials; creating dramatic land forms to shape spaces, circulation and park programs; celebrating the city’s unique culture and history in the park’s design; and utilizing Uralkali’s new headquarters to create a civic gateway into the park. In addition, the design of the site goes to great lengths to address sustainable design through stormwater management, preservation and other green strategies.

The city of Berezniki is located approximately 1,000 miles east of Moscow. Its remote location, long winters, struggling economy, and long history of mining presented unique challenges to the revitalization of the large park in the heart of the city. The lack of city funding in recent years has led to a decline in both the landscape and facilities within the park.

Integrating project goals with a thorough analysis of the park’s existing conditions, NBBJ in close partnership with the city, its citizens, and Uralkali, developed a new framework for transforming the park into a world-class urban, public space.
