Partner Matthew Somerton is a design leader at NBBJ, specializing in civic, corporate, and commercial projects. He is guided by his conviction that design can drive radical change, creating a better future for both people and the planet. Matthew’s leadership is comprehensive and integrative, often encompassing sustainable infrastructure, urban design, architecture, and interior design.
Over his three decades in design, Matthew has partnered with key clients such as the GSA, Boeing, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, as well as top developers in the Pacific Northwest. He has led a diverse array of major projects, including courthouses, corporate high-rises, workplace interiors, sustainable infrastructure, and performing arts buildings. His civic work encompasses numerous state and federal courthouses, including the award-winning United States Courthouse in Bakersfield, part of the GSA’s Design Excellence Program.
Passionate about sustainability, Matthew spearheaded the formation of an interdisciplinary studio at NBBJ to accelerate the integration of sustainable design across the firm. The group developed a comprehensive sustainability roadmap to help project teams maximize building performance for clients.
Matthew frequently speaks at conferences and public forums on urbanism, architecture, equitable access to justice through design, and sustainability. An avid cyclist and advocate for mass transit, he prioritizes design solutions that enhance urban mobility and foster healthy communities. A true collaborator at heart, Matthew was recently recognized as NBBJ’s Mentor of the Year.
