CAMBRIDGE, UK – NBBJ is to design the £120 million mixed-use Forum development for specialist investor in and manager of public sector infrastructure assets, John Laing in partnership with Cambridge University Hospitals.
The Forum will have a postgraduate medical education centre with specialist surgical training facilities, a conference centre, a 200-bed hotel, a 75-bed private hospital, retail spaces and 450 parking spaces.
Located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC), the Forum will provide a hub where clinicians, researchers and academics from across the world can come together to share knowledge and expertise and develop life-changing drugs and treatments for patients. CBC aims to be one of the leading biomedical centres in the world by 2020.

The Forum is a crucial part of the CUH’s vision, and will illustrate the potential benefits innovation can bring to CUH’s patients and the staff who care for them.”
Jane McElroy, principal at NBBJ’s London studio said: “We are working very closely with the Trust and stakeholders to create a landmark development on a human scale. The Forum will be a dynamic and collaborative environment and a central focus for the campus.
“The components of the design for the Forum are distinct with differing heights and forms, reflecting their varied uses and locations on the site, but they are very clearly part of the same family. By placing the building along the site boundaries, as in a traditional Cambridge college, landscaped open spaces are created within the development. We are proposing high quality facades to create a strong civic presence for the building with substantial areas of transparent glazing to bring lightness and animation.”
Sharing of functions, future flexibility and options for expansion are key to the scheme’s concept design.
The Forum’s internal concourse is a dynamic double-height space that connects the individual components of the development with each other and with the wider campus. The spectacular fully glazed colonnade facing the campus High Street establishes a grand scale for the development and a busy, welcoming entrance.
The 4 star hotel, located to the north of the site, forms a landmark gateway to the campus.
The private hospital is at the southern end of the site, ideally located close to the main Addenbrooke’s Hospital buildings and adjacent to the new postgraduate education centre. The angled ward blocks create a stimulating central landscaped courtyard, maximising natural daylight and views for both patients and staff.
The refreshing landscape design concept is based on an interconnecting network of natural forms representing the interactive activities to be hosted in the Forum. This consistency in design approach creates a memorable sense of place and makes wayfinding intuitive.
A considered combination of energy-efficient design, high-performance building envelope and connection to the Addenbrooke Hospital’s proposed new energy centre will result in low-carbon operation.
Green roofs, sustainable drainage systems and rainwater harvesting will minimise the impact of the building on the area’s water cycle. There is substantial provision for cycle parking and associated infrastructure such as connection to surrounding cycle paths, showers and lockers. Car parking and general services are discreetly located below the building, maximising parking capacity but minimising its impact on the overall design.
Ramsay Health Care UK will operate the private hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospital will manage the education centre. The final contractual details have still to be completed and will be subject to final approval by both the CUH board of directors and council of governors.
Construction is planned to start on site in spring 2014, with completion of the development expected mid 2016.
