How Hospitals Can Repair the Fabric of a City

IHEEM Healthcare Estates, Manchester, UK

David Lewis, a principal in NBBJ's London office, will address the annual Institute of Healthcare Engineering & Estate Management (IHEEM) Healthcare Estates Conference & Exhibition on October 8 in Manchester. There, he will explore the role a hospital can play in repairing a city's urban fabric, considering the new £335m Royal Liverpool University Hospital as a case study.

In the 1970s, the previous incarnations of the Royal Liverpool Hospital were demolished and replaced with one building that both stood apart from and overwhelmed its surroundings. The new hospital, scheduled for completion in 2017, is being designed to restore a sense of place to central Liverpool.
